Setting Up for Business Trips and Travel

A short trip abroad or back to China needs no router and no protocol research: install the Cisco client (Cisco Secure Client) on the phone, test it once before leaving, and use it on landing. Both directions are the same task — abroad, choose a nearby overseas region for Google, work email and maps; back in China, choose the China region for Chinese video and banking. This guide covers the ten-minute preparation, two common traps on hotel and airport networks, and how to use banking and payment apps.

Ten minutes before you leave

  1. Install Cisco Secure Client on the phone (App Store, Google Play, or the installer on this site’s Cisco page), log in to the site, click a region flag to copy its address, enter it, and connect once with your site credentials to confirm it works.
  2. Copy two more region addresses into the client: one near the destination and one backup. Local networks differ, and the best region often changes.
  3. Note the three domains (7d24hrs.com → 7x24btc.com → anyfq.com) and at least one support-group entry so you can find us from an unfamiliar network.
  4. Install a client on the laptop too, or use the web-proxy extension — it still works on a company laptop that cannot take a client.

After landing

  • With a local SIM or roaming enabled, just connect; nothing needs reconfiguring. If roaming traffic already exits abroad, the route merely fixes the exit region.
  • Abroad, for Google, Gmail, work email and maps: choose a nearby overseas region for the best speed.
  • Back in China, for Tencent Video, iQIYI, NetEase Music or banking: choose the China region. Chinese sites leave from a Chinese IP while overseas sites still land abroad, so the China region does not stop Gmail from working.
  • If an overseas region will not connect from inside China: change region, switch to mobile data, then try sing-box or OpenVPN — blocking of the three protocols is independent.

Two traps on hotel, airport and café networks

  • Captive portals: finish the browser login first, then start the route. A client set to auto-connect tries before the portal login and fails; wait a moment or reconnect manually.
  • UDP limits: many hotel and airport networks throttle or block UDP. Cisco over TLS is unaffected — the reason it is the first choice for travel; if sing-box or the private network is slow or drops, switch to Cisco.

Banking, payments and 12306

These apps record the login IP, and bouncing between overseas and Chinese addresses is the easiest way to trigger a risk check. Connect to the China region first, then open the app; quit the app, then disconnect. Do not keep switching networks while using the same banking app on a trip.

Not receiving SMS codes has nothing to do with the route; it is the phone number’s roaming. Enable roaming on your Chinese number before leaving, or move to a plan that receives SMS abroad.

Why Cisco rather than sing-box for travel?

Unfamiliar networks most often restrict UDP; Cisco over TLS behaves like any HTTPS site and works almost everywhere. sing-box is faster on lossy networks but fails where UDP is blocked. Install both and switch if one fails.

Does the China region slow down local sites abroad?

They take a detour. Disconnect when you are done with Chinese content, or connect only when needed.
